Do you have a resource allocation problem? Is apache running out of file
descriptors or memory or something else?

You mention the problem has been going on for a while - so it predates the
update? Has it got worse since the update?

Is dmesg saying anything?
Turn logging right up and make sure apache is giving debug logs.
