Thanks to all who sent me a quick reply.....i took another look on the net and 
came up with a doc/how-to by Steve Litt called Installing Your ATAPI CDRW 
Drive In Linux......i followed the addition to the modules.conf (the ide-scsi 
line ) file but as i use grub not lilo didnt use the other change......yep it 
works....at least the  cdrecord -scanbus  does....and loads a linux 
driver.....
