I recommend Debian as the best of Linux (IMHO of course :)  Highly
polished & well integrated OS with the best package management tools I've
ever seen.

Also of interest is Gentoo which is a Linux distro in the spirit of BSD
(uses ports style updates, etc).  Haven't played with it so I can't
comment further.
