ext3 copes well enough with resizing downwards, and upwards. It's more
the issue of where the start of the filesystem actually resides on the
filesystem that has now grown (down presummably). 

I'd suggest that depending on how customised the machine is, it'd be
easier to copy the data you want to keep elsewhere and reinstall.
