I have a no-name laptop that's about 12 months old that runs
FreeBSD-4.3 (but won't properly run any later releases, due to
changes in the handling of PCMCIA cards in the later releases).
I've half given up hoping that FreeBSD will come to the party
and am considering trying out a Linux distribution. I want one
that has a relatively small footprint, can be treated as much
like Unix as possible, and can be expected to have support for a
wide range of PCMCIA cards (especially Lucent-type wireless
cards). It also needs to be easy to install across a network,
as my DVD drive in the laptop is broken.
I'm interested to hear any suggestions, and will be at the next
meeting to pursue this further if anybody cares to help me out.
