[H-GEN] dvd reccomendations?

I'm finally succuming to the dvd gadget thing and looking to purchase 
one this afternoon.

any reccomendations/experiences others want to pass on?
I believe the Livid utilities are required.

thediscshop.com.au has a few makes/models, I'm guessing they all work 
under linux

16x speed seems to be the standard, brands available are
Pioneer, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Sony, AOpen, LG and 4KUS?

$ range from $78 to $99

as a general rule I try to avoid the cheapest product.

I've heard (what might be an urban legend) to avoid the slot loading 
drives, storeperson claimed he had seen a DVD launch itself and embed 
into wall while spinning at 000's rpm.
