What did you change it to? Do the map forward and reverse? Are you 
getting your IP from DHCP? Details.

Odd. Anything in /var/log/message or /var/log/XFree86.foo.log?

It's possible that something you've done whilst thrashing around has 
confused gnome thouroughly. rm .gnome and try again.

Yep, sounds like what I've described above -  a classic 
fiddle-break-aiiee-thrash-breaksomemore-ohgod-splat scenario.
