Forgive my ingnorance but what is this for? What benefits can it provide?

Is it so that people can't forge that the mail is from me when it isn't? 
What else is it used for?

I can get some sort of key signed, is that like getting an autograph 
from a celeberity, do you collect these 'keys' after they are signed?

Who actually uses these keys?
