This is something akin to the discussion yesterday regarding tar ball
installation - where does it go?
I don't normally use Red Hat but installed ver 8.0 for a friend last night.
He has a Conexant HCF modem which, as usual, is not recognised during the
initial install. I have routinely installed many of these modems under
Mandrake using drivers from the web.
Because of my lack of familiarity with Red Hat, I accidentally downloaded
and installed the wrong kernel/architecture mix RPM. The installation
seemed to go fine but the usual symlink was not available and the total
distro started to run "doggy/slow". I tried uninstalling the RPM and was
greeted with words to the effect that the RPM was not installed.
"Ah, good, I say". I then download the correct RPM and on attempting to
install the correct RPM, I get a few words that tell me that a newer version
of the RPM is already installed and it won't proceed. I then get on a
treadmill where I can't uninstall because it is "not installed" and I can't
upgrade/relocate/force the correct version.
I gave up at 1am this morning and therefore don't have access to the machine
right now. I want to go back to finish the job but would rather go armed.
Can I manually edit the RPM database to remove reference to the HCF RPM that
is supposed to be installed/not installed? Is it that easy or do I format
/dev/hde and start again?
Should I just install the tar ball version and to hell with the RPM?
Regards,
Rick
