One thing I found when playing with procmail, ignore all the doco that
says you have to have a ~/.forward file. I don't have one and it works
fine.

I would recommend setting up CourierIMAP. I tried Cyrus and failed to get
it going.
Courier allows you to use POP3 or IMAP. I recommend IMAP, it keeps all
your mail in one central location, it allows you to connect using whatever
client you feel like today, it keeps which messages are read and which are
not, you can connect using any decent client (and even some crap ones i.e.
Outlook Express:).
I would recommend setting up an IMAP server even if you only have a single
workstation. Use fetchmail to collect it and Courier to make it available
to yourself at 127.0.0.1 it makes for great flexability.
