I've not studied FAT file systems as I've managed to avoid them;
but I'd expect them to have lots of stuff in common with their
antecedents from CP/M -- given the way those file systems work,
it's not surprising that you might get corruption in places that
you might not expect if you withdraw power before the system has
finished updating things.

What I find odd is that the camera really should just ignore the
off switch until it's ready to be turned off.  After all, that
would be really simple to do and would prevent these little
mishaps.
