Sorry for the delay, I just got around to fixing this.
I did 3 things to fox my cdrw to work with 2.6:
1. I removed append="hdc=ide-scsi" from my lilo.conf (leaving other
append info in place) and reran lilo.
2. I changed references in /etc/fstab from /dev/sr0 to /dev/hdc
3. I made sure by s/w of choice (xcdroast) was aware the device name of
the cdrw had changed. In my case this just meant getting it to
autodetect the device.
I just burned a cd as proof of concept (and cause I needed to burn one
anyway :)
