Go look up my Wish List on Amazon.com (Christopher Biggs, Chapel Hill
Qld).

You won't find a book that does C _and_ C++ in any depth.

For C, I suggest _Harbison & Steele_. McGills have it, but their
catalog only lists an older editition. You can get the new edition
from Amazon. _K&R_ is good too, but is not purely aimed at reference.

(If anyone knows a local source of _H&S_ 5ed, can you please let me
know---I need to update my aging 3rd ed).

For C++, don't go past _Stroustrup_.

Be prepared for sticker shock.

You can also get a free online copy (also available as dead
trees or plastic coasters) of "Thinking in C++" by Bruce Eckel.
(Google for it). This is a tutorial, not a reference, but it has a
references list at the end, and a fairly good index.
