You could also use sudo.  apt-get install sudo and then edit the 
/etc/sudoers file.  You really should use this anyway as it saves a lot 
of stuffing around when you want to run root programs.  You can then run 
"sudo whatever-x-based-admin-tool-you-like" from within an X terminal 
without any further mucking around with X authority crap.
