I would suggest that there are already two groups that should be doing
this kind of thing. SAGE-AU has meetings on the second Thursday of every
month at 7:00pm (which seems silly given Thursday night shopping, but
anyway). There are others on this list who have a better idea.

Personally, this sounds exactly like what AUUG (Australian Unix User's
Group) is supposed to be. I have been to one of their conferences, and
it was great, but the Queensland chapter of AUUG seems to have almost
died (or their webmaster has). AUUG hosts the Australian Open Source
awards and symposium, so I think you'll find that Qld AUUG members would
be keen to be involved in something like this. More info is available at

I'd be happy to help put such a group together, but I'm stuck in
Wollongong NSW.
