I haven't found it too bad on the Indy here... Actually, sound didn't
want to work on IRIX when we first got the machine, it was not until I
installed Debian Woody and updated it to kernel 2.4.19 that I got any
sound whatsoever.

It now runs great under Debian Unstable. KDE 3.1 being a little on the
low side to start up (well, it's hard to know if anything is happening
at first because the splash screen doesn't appear) but once it's in, it
goes fine.

Makes a nice MP3 jukebox too :-D Caused a stir at one lan I went to.

True, but it'll get there eventually.

| Stick with IRIX. It's not all that different to Linux, and it works
| well on the hardware.

I'd have a closer look at IRIX, but all I have are Overlay discs for
6.5.3. (They're official pressed CDs from SGI), I'm lacking the
foundation CDs and development CDs.

I did mess around with it when we first got the machine, but the lack of
support for the hardware (it was a barest minimal install with hardly
any utilities or drivers) especially the audio and video input, sort of
left a bad taste in my mouth. Also, SGI were unwilling to tell me where
to obtain a copy -- preferring to banter me around the various departments.
