I've tried ls with several of your suggestions and I can never get ls to
run without giving the permission warning.

I tried this suggestion and deleted the write and read list but still no
go!

I found a the samba howto (unofficial) and it suggested

[public]
Browsable = yes
Creat mode = 0666
Directory mode 0777
Guest ok = yes
Guest only = yes
Path = /homd/shared/public
Read only = no

Stop and restart samba and the same - no access and unable to ls in the
directory.

Is it something to do with the directory permissions for public
Permissions - drwxrw-rw-
Owner - root

Do you know if this is correct?

I hgave read a fair bit but do not understand fully the interplay
between file and directoy permissions ans Samba permissions.

Any advice gratefully received.
