I've had some success and now have Apache (default announcement page,
but its definitely working) and Samba running and allowing user access
to home directories on the Linux box from the XP machine. The Linux home
directory appears in the Windows machine's network neighborhood - great!
1. BUT, I've set up a public area where anyone can put files to be
shared within the LAN - the folder shows on the network neighborhood
view on the XP box but when I try to connect I get the 'share
unavailable' message indicating that I do not have permission to view
the share.
Here is the entry in the smb.conf file
[public]
comment = Public Stuff
path = /home/shared/public/
write list = root, alex, jane, simon, @users
public = yes
read list = root, alex, jane, simon, @users
guest ok = no
All users are entered into both the smbpasswrd and linux users system,
passwords and usernames are identical in linux and windows machines.
Permissions for the /home/shared/public directory are 766 or drwxrw-rw-
owner is root
I have read through the man page and some of the O'Reilly linux book,
google etc but am still not sure whether the problem is Samba share or
directory permission based.
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
2. For my apache share I have read about forcing the files written via a
Samba share to take on the 'apache' group or user owner. If anyone has a
sample [web] share that includes this I would like to have this
explained to me.
Sorry to ask so much all the time. I feel I almost have a useable
system, I can almost smell the pixels being lit from my first live
webpage.
