Take a look at ImageMagic,  I believe it will do what you are asking 
for.  I believe there is a Linux Journal article series looking at this.

The Python Image Library (PIL) is also reputed to do similar things with 
relative ease.

Take both with a grain of salt, as I haven't done this myself.
