Do you mean mbr? Runs before LILO does and prints a little "1FA" (or
similar) prompt? I know it's possible to remove it---perhaps by
installing some other boot-loader over it (I'm pretty sure it lives in
the boot sector of the drive) and I can't remember much about the
functionality it offers.
If it's LILO you're talking about, then I don't know how to proceed,
either; I abandoned it from GRUB some time ago. If it'll help I know
it's possible to configure LILO to wait forever for an OS to boot. I
haven't ever seen a boot loader which would remember which OS was
booted last time.
Not very helpful, I know.
