Yeah, I wondered about that but I think that the official announcement to
use this numbering scheme coincided with the release of 1.0.0. It could
indeed be said the scheme was effectively in use before 1.0.0.

For reference, I started using Linux with 1.0.8 in June 1994, 3 months
after the release of 1.0.0, not like the venerable (but not old ;) Mr
Biggs. Chris was the first person I knew who was running a unix box in
his house. The 2nd person was James Lever, who beat me by about a week as
I recall :)

It may interest members to know that Humbug started 15 months later in
September 1995. I had actually tried to kick off the first meeting of a
unix group about 6 months earlier in March 1995 but met with little
interest. I decided to wait a while & try again. In June or August 1995
I posted to uq.general & bne.general again proposing the idea of a unix
user group. This time I got a lot more interest. The idea took off and
we had the first meeting in September 1995.

Originally the name Humbug wasn't liked by the people interested in
forming a club, but we agreed to use it until we thought of something
else. By the time of the first meeting the name had stuck (mainly because
the first mailing list had been called Humbug by this time, and because
the name was already getting known around the St Lucia campus). The
founding members agreed to accept it as the permanent name.

Cheers,
	Rob
