Robert Brockway <robert at timetraveller.org> moved upon the face of the 'Net and spake thusly:

You /could/ argue that it started even sooner than that, since the
previous versions were, IIRC, 0.1x, 0.3x, and 0.9x, and 1.0 was the _first_
"stable" version.
