$ will do, but it's then both removed from file and in the mailbox.
I've once tried to make a patch so the fact that the status was
written into the mailbox (just like read, unread and new, you now
had a status Deleted). The advantage is that if you keep mail for
a week, two weeks, three weeks without purging it and you do something
stupid which causes mutt to close without saving, at least you don't
have to delete all the messages again.
Maybe it's in mutt-devel already, maybe not.
