Neither cpio or dd managed to do the job. dd does exactly the same thing as
cp ie: the process just hangs there chewing up lots of CPU.

cpio was a little different;

<snip>
[root at topaz backups]# ls repository.*
repository.tgz
[root at topaz backups]# ls repository.tgz | cpio -mp /mnt/apps/Topaz_backup/
cpio: repository.tgz: Value too large for defined data type
0 blocks
[root at topaz backups]#
</snip>

As a work around, I've split the job up to create two tgz files, one about
1GB and one about 1.5GB. This should work OK.

Thanks to those who responded to my posting.
