If you actually care about security of your data, you'll need to
read up a bit on the topic -- this is a non-trivial problem to
solve for scripting and most people who think they have solved
it turn out to be seriously mistaken. If you want pointers to
clues, read a good book (e.g., by Bruce Schneier), or subscribe
to Schneier's free monthly newsletter and read back copies until
you find discussions of this problem (and other related stuff).

Here's the blurb about the newsletter and how to subscribe and
find back issues:

CRYPTO-GRAM is a free monthly newsletter providing summaries,
analyses, insights, and commentaries on computer security and
cryptography. Back issues are available on
    <http://www.counterpane.com/crypto-gram.html>.

    To subscribe, visit <http://www.counterpane.com/crypto-gram.html> or
send a blank message to crypto-gram-subscribe at chaparraltree.com.
