It all depends on what video card you have really, opengl is built into
Linux, all you need to do is either:
1) Buy a 3d card that X-Windows has a 3d accelerated driver for(geforces are
the only cards I know of).

2) Scour the internet and find a 3d accelerated driver for X-Windows for the
type of card you have, then load that driver instead(I don't how to load
other drivers, but I assume you probably do, since you have demonstrated to
me several times that you are ten times more proficient with Linux than I am
:)

There is also an alternate opengl implementation called Mesa Gl(I think :P,
maybe Mesa 3d?) and Mesa appears to have accelerated drivers for a few cards
that X-Windows doesn't, what sort of 3D card are you running???

Hope this helps in some way!
