May I be a heretic and suggest you try a Logitech Trackman trackball?
I've been using the various forms of the Trackman products since 1991,
and I love them with the same passion your average Mac user loves his
Mac. No need to ever walk your mouse, they never get jerky (at least
the optical models) because of crap inside the mouse. Sit them on your
thigh and they work. Hold them upside down in your hand, they work.
They've been using optical tracking since at least '95.
There are the various shapes you can get them in, and you'd be hard
pressed to find one that won't be comfortable. My father, brother and
sister all use different shapes to what I have, and all three love
them as well.
