I'm thinking of trying to run an application that only exists as
a Windows binary under WINE. It has to run on my laptop, which
multiboots Windows ME (extremely rarely), FreeBSD-4.x (usually)
and FreeBSD-5.x (when I want to live dangerously).

I know next to nothing about installing Windows applications and
nothing at all about WINE.

I'd be grateful if somebody could tell me if I should first try
to install the program as a Windows thing, test run it to see
how it works, and then install WINE and see if it knows how to
find and run the program?

Or could I just install WINE, copy the application into some
Unix directory and try to get WINE to run it from there?

If both the above scenarios are too stupid for words, please
don't hesitate to tell me.

Thanks in advance for any quick clues that people can give me.

Greg
