dig doesn't add the default domain to the name to be resolved (At
least, the bind dig doesn't)

For the rest, use /etc/resolv.conf. It's a host specific configuration,
not a DNS server configuration. But, to make it sounds not as bad
as it could, DHCP option 119 defines the domain search!
