Well that all depends on what you do with/to the system - but it is like
that no matter what OS or distro you run. My debian installs are all
fine the only stuff I touch is what I need to change to do things.

This can be a fatal problem in the *nix community, if you don't update
something when a major bug is found you can be leaving yourself open to
attack. With updateing debian it depends on whether you choose to go the
stable or unstable route, but it is easy to update (gotta love apt) and
there are repositories of security updated packages for stable so you
don't have to do lots of nasty things to get a patched binary.
