I think what's more important here is to recognise that nowadays there is
actually very little code that is not touched by compiler optimizers. The
effort that goes into architecting and engineering the optimizers is huge,
and for somebody to come along and say "well, this distro sux planets through
straws because it doesn't have p3 or p4 or sparc64-optimized binaries" is
merely an indication of how little understanding that person actually has.
A weenie, in other words.
Of course, the sparc optimizer that is in gcc from pre-3.0 is reported to
be pretty awful, but that's been rectified iirc.
