That is the next thing I should to look at, I'll replace it tomorrow
and see what happens (fingers crossed).  There is very little
explaination for why the box has died like this, an exhaused battery
could very well be the cause.

Yep, clearly stamped underneath the chip, and the jumpers on the
m'board are set correctly.  As I said, it was apparently working
fine before I got my hands on it :)

Yes, and yes, I have been through all that :)  They do tend to get
very dusty after a while, but I cleaned out this box only a few
weeks ago anyway.
