Yes, the magic phrase :)  It was turning up in relation to this problem in 
the doco.

I was considering dropping the MTU on the ethernet & the pppoe, but I'll 
try just the ether & see how it goes.

The windows boxen are already running via squid (no NAT) but even the 
Linux box itself is exhibiting the behaviour.
