when the 586 was the gateway, we either compiled the kernel on a faster
machine, or left it overnight.
I remember when i had my old 486, just keeping the default redhat 5.1
kernel because it took too long to compile a new one. even though this
meant not having sound support, it was somewhat worth it so that I didn't
have to leave my machine compiling for 24 hours or more.
