ouch. i've been burnt before with an sblive i was borrowing from a friend. 
mind u this was about 18 months ago I assume the module works fine now 
*cough* but I thought "hey, it's creative. everyone owns creative hardware. 
there won't be any issues with the kernel module." since then, I refuse to 
put any creative hardware in a machine I intend to install an operating 
system on.

With my C-Media, I type: modprobe cmpci
bingo, up comes sound. Never had a hassle. (I stopped loading it during 
startup because I didn't always want the sound module loaded. Found it 
easier to just modprobe it when I wanted to play sounds.)
