I have run Debian Potato, easy to install and prodigiously stable. I abandoned
it in favour of Mandrake 8.1 then 8.2 also easy to install and stable for most
things. Not a real flash development environment though.
The only reason I went to Mandrake was so I could have later versions of
Postgres and PHP the easy (read lazy) way. I will be returning to the Debian
fold as soon as I can motivate myself to get hold of Woody.
As for hardware, all platforms, distros, and versions within distros can cause
hardware problems as they drop support for older hardware or if they are
not up to date with new hardware. I once ran into trouble installing Debian
Potato revision 3 which did not support a particular ISA nic. With a 1gig
Athlon you seem to be very much in the middle of the road and not
likely to get trouble with anything.
Cheers
