If the data is in any way important or difficult to replace in
some other way (e.g., from those backups that everybody keeps),
then you need to stop experimenting and bring it along so that
people who know what they're doing can have a shot at it before
things get any worse.  But, from the way you've described it,
things may well be beyond retrieval now.
