Check out www.linuxprinting.org, there's a nice database with brands,
types, info and instructions.

I recently bought an EPSON Stylus C60, and it produces excellent
results. Costs only around $269.
I use the CUPS system (not lpd) with GIMP-Print. CUPS is already present
on RH 7.3 (you just need to switch from lpd to CUPS).
The GIMP-Print drives are very good, apparently way better colour
reproduction than the original Windows drivers. This might affect your
decision whether or not you need a more expensive model...

I first connected the printed via an LPT port, but later switched to
USB. Even that works with zero effort. Just told CUPS to now use the
first USB printer port, and that was it.

Anyway, I'd say check out the EPSON Stylus series. Just check whether
the specific model is fully supported (www.linuxprinting.org) and then
you're in the clear.

Regards,
Arjen.
