For myself, I cannot fully change over to linux until I can use adobe
photoshop, illustrator and some other graphics apps under linux. And
that won't happen in the short term as far as I can tell. I could not
really care less about ms apps like office, as I do not use them much,
but I can see how this can be an issue for medium to large companies.
However I have worked in a large coporate office, and I don't think they
were using even half of ms office capabilites. I am also heavily mac
based (also quite excited at switching to OS X at some stage this year,
so in some regards I am still getting to use my apps in a unix
enviroment), so already to some extent I am free of ms, but macs are
expensive and have their own issues.
The way I see it, if you want people to change, you've got to offer
something the other guy doesn't, and in the case of stuff like ms
office, that carrot will have to be pretty big for the average user. MS
is also trying to move to this .Net thing and passport (two things which
I am at the moment against) , if this happens, then the ball game
changes. For linux to succeed, it needs to develop new ideas that people
will want to adopt, and also overcome general apathy towards trying new
OSes and apps.
in summary it comes down to two things, applications and innovation. If
there is the app there for people to use (eg ms office on a mac, I think
it would have been bad for macs if office wasn't availalble for it),
they'll use it, and if its a new can cool idea people will be tempted to
try it (just look at gaming consoles, it seems a constant struggle to
stay number one, as there are lots of good games for the two main
consoles, anyone entering the market, needs to work even harder to get
market share)
my 0.01 AUD worth
cheers
