First of all think about whether you want to do it that way...income is not
as regular as working for a wage and the first few years are tough. Doing
the work, representing yourself, promoting, being the phone answerer and the
janitor as well as the resident guru is not easy initially.
Legally, its pretty easy...operate as a sole trader or partnership or form a
company (often better from a liability viewpoint but most sharp operators
get around this by wanting personal guarantees etc) see you legal and
accounting consultants. The IT business is a lot freer of restriction than
say being a Chartered Engineer or Chartered Accountant where recognised
qualifications are required (for better or worse)
As others have noted, forming the business is easy...getting a reliable
clientele is the hard part.
Just think you could have done $100,000 worth of work for One-Tel and
celebrated when you got a $1 million dollar contract from Ansett.
As others have said, at least having a mentor or sounding board to discuss
things with is important and a sole trader has a major difficulty with
taking holidays!
