I think I gave a really quick reply to this yesterday but I will give a bit
more detail today.

1. I would be doubtful that the problem is the init string but it is
possible I suppose.

When I had this kind of trouble (for instance...the first time I dialled I
would not get a connection then the second time I got through. Or I kept
getting bumped off almost straight away - which may be your problem) I was
trying to connect at 56KB or 48 Kb or 40 Kb and my phone line could not
actually always operate at that speed.
I did the Telecom MOLS test and I need to keep well below 40Kb to get a
steady connection.

2. If you want to add init strings in either kppp...go to setup then the
modem tab or device tab cant remember which and go to edit modem commands
where you will find an init string box which is set to ATZ by default IIRC
... gppp is similar but I think the "Edit modem commands" button is on the
initial page.

3. Red Hat systems usually also had a quick dial setup (which I suspect
might have been a Red Hat implementation of WVDial..that is really quick but
maybe nasty. I have not really looked too deeply into it but I suspect that
an init string may not be able to be set.

4. Using ppp-on scripts you can put you init script in the start paramater
IIRC but check the docs (maybe the ppp-Howto).

5. Another possibility is that you may have a permission problem that only
allows you to dial out as root but I would have thought you would have
received some warning message about that.

What interface are you trying to use kppp? gppp?
