What's wrong with Ghostscript? I suppose that the config could be a
little tricky, but I was lazy and used printtool, so I wouldn't know (yes,
I know it was written by Redhat, but 'apt-get install printtool' worked
just fine, thank you :-)
Once you've overcome any admin hurdles with Ghostscript (and I don't
believe there are many) then you can just treat your printer like it's
postscript, and you'll never know the difference. I use a postscript
printer here at work, and a non-postscript printer with ghostscript at
home, and the only difference I can see at home is it chews up a little
more CPU on the print server (as you'd expect).
In case anyone is concerned about ghostscript compliance to the postscript
standards, then I can't give any definitive answers, however I print
quite a bit at home (including colour photos) and I've yet to find a
problem with it.
