I don't know about optus but you can download a prpgram called bpalogin
for connecting for Telstra BigPond cable. Its not from telstra but one
of their customers (very easy setup .rpm and .tar.gz).  I've been using
it for over 6months on my RedHat machine to ip-masq to my flatmates (and
other occasional house-guests) windows machine.  BigPond has been more
stable and reliable in the last 2-3 months than in the past.  I imagine
that they have worked out a lot of their bugs.
