Today I got the D-Link card working just fine in another box. I suspect a
bug in one of the old 2.2 kernel, the 3Com driver, or the rtl8193 driver.
I am just happy that I have a main machine with two working NICs reading
for ISDN (yay!).
The solution for my main box was to find another 3COM 595 Ethernet card;
which works happily on the same interrupt as its brother card. It is
annoying that I couldn't bend the drivers to my will, but this annoyance
is far outweighed by having a working machine. :-)
Thanks for all your help,
Raymond
