Well I did try that, but it was really as an act of desperation, since
even a corrupt ISO should be fine to burn to a CD.  (BTW, they mount just
fine).

Just to demonstrate that the data in the ISO doesn't matter, you don't
even need to use an ISO when burning to CD.  It's just as valid to burn an
ext2fs image to an ISO (though you'll have to mount it read-only).  I did
this with a CDRW recently just to see it.  :-)
