What version of X are you running? With XFree86 4.0, I've noticed
quite a few font changes (such as the apostrope (') no longer pointing
to the right) as well as the ugly font issue you're talking about
here.
What can help, basically, is installing more fonts until you find some
that work well.
Also it would probably be worth your while to check that your X server
and font selections agree on the resolution of the display, but that's
a bit of a stab in the dark.

I haven't actually looked at the image because I've been delaying this
