I was going to suggest you go do this, but I notice that
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHEA-2001-016.html warns about going
back to an older version of the library.

You could always try to build gcc-2.2-5g from source, and install it into
a different directory from usual. Then, you could set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH
to use 2.2-5 and see if RPM still works. If its does, then you could
backup and try switching over to 2.2-5 (maybe by forcing an install from
rpm or by changing your ld.conf).
