By way of lightweight window managers, I'd have to recommend sawfish.
Quick to load, responsive, quite full featured without the bloat of
enlightenment. Most importantly to me, it does one job - it manages my
windows. No crap all over the screen, just window decorations.
That, or go with twm. :)
