Hi Everyone,
I seem to have rambled a bit in this email, so please
only read if you are interested in a part time job doing computer
installations.
I hope its okay to post this particular job offer here
as its only remotely unix/linux related, but it does require someone
with a good knowledge of computers in general. The job is with a company
called Kickstart and they do computer installations through some of the
Harvey Norman stores. Until recently I was doing this on the south side
for them. This job would be ideal for a student as most of the
installations are either at night or on the weekend. I was getting $25
an install plus travel if the home was more that 15 klms from the
nearest Harvey Normam Store.

Rough Job Outline:
All that is required is you turn up (everything you need has been
brought home by the customer), unpack and setup the computer and any
peripherals that came with it, i.e. printer and/or scanner, and usually
connect them to the internet, usually really easy, except when some of
the drivers don't work, which does happen, thats why someone with a
good, broad knowledge of computers helps, and also why I thought of
posting this here. The only catch is that you have a hour to do all
this, and sometimes the computer isn't even out of the box, thats when
time gets a bit tight. You are probably laughing now, thinking that one
hour is plenty of time, but remember the whole family is usually
watching you, and they usually know nothing, so'll you end up showing
them the basics too - (not trying to sound condesending)
things like - turning the computer on and off, on the odd occassion how
to use the mouse, getting on the internet, reading their email, basic
things that. Not all are customers newbies, but most are, so it helps if
you are patient.

99.9999 percent of the computers will be windows based, but I did do one
linux install last year. Harvey Norman tech bays are nowhere near linux
savy, so if a customer buys one of the installs that they sell (I think
it is mandrake and corel) and you know some linux, they'll be calling
you.

The work was not regular, sometimes I might do up four installs a week,
sometimes less, sometimes none. If you don't mind travelling to the
north side there will likely be more work, especially if you are
flexible, it seems that its hard to get flexible workers these days.

Anyway if you are interested, then call Nancie on 3219 0200, during the
day or late evening.

and I apologise if this email is not appropriate to this discussion
list.

cheers

Johann
