I have installed Interbase 6 on a debian system with the .tgz from the
borland web site.
I did not have any problems and found the install program very good.

The gds_db service is installed into your inetd.conf. all you really need to
do in choose where you want to store your databases.
you can get interbase 6.01 CS from
http://inprise-svca.www.conxion.com/InterBaseCS_LI-V6.0.1.tar
or
 http://inprise-svca.www.conxion.com/InterBaseCS_LI-V6.0-1.i386.rpm

have fun.
